F.A.Q. Adding Photos
How do I update the photos in my Profile?
Log in, go to your profile menu, sidebar WHS Traveller.
You have space for 2 'personal' pictures:
- is in Edit your Account
- is in Edit your Profile
It's recommended to upload both.
The one in Edit your Profile, 'Featured Image', is intended as the banner photo. But if you have not set the first one, it takes the other position first. You might need to play around a bit with these 2 options.
Which fields do I have to fill in when I add photos of sites?
- Title (mandatory): at least include the site name. Don't use flowery descriptions or the technical name like DCBX8329 (we will never be able to find it again). This is the only searchable field.
- File (mandatory): upload the image, max. 10 MB
- Description (optional): you may add a more specific description of the pictured element (name of a location for example).
- Tags (optional): you may tag it with the country name.
- Focal point (optional): you may indicate a specific area to be zoomed in on; this can be especially useful for banner photos.
How do I handle the photos in my reviews?
By default, the migrated reviews will have only one photo (if you supplied one), which is shown at the top right of the review text.
If you want to make full use of the larger sizes now available and the option to add more than one photo, look at this example of a review, where 4 new full-size photos were added.
You can set your own banner for this review page alone, via Featured Image. And add images in the review text as well via using the add options in the text (type a '/' and you will see the image option popping up).
How can I submit photos for use on the generic pages?
Log in, go to your profile menu, and choose Images just below the sidebar WHS Traveller.
Here you can add any photo, considering:
Don’t dump your entire photo folder, but carefully select which site you’d like to add a photo to. As with writing a review, preferred are:
- sites that don’t have a photo yet (only show a coloured block in the index pages)
- sites that have a banner picture but none in the gallery next to the main site text
- serial sites where we have a photo of one location, but you have one that shows another
- those that show an aspect mentioned in the connections.
Upload the photo yourself via Images in the left banner.
- The title must indicate which site it is, e.g., “Vienna”. Better, though, is “Vienna Hofburg” or “Vienna Coffee House”
- Your profile name will be automatically attached to the picture; you don’t have to put that in the title or anywhere else.
- A moderator will find it and attach it to the appropriate page(s).
- If you have submitted more than a couple or intend them to be used at very specific pages, accompany them with an explanation by email.
And of course:
- You can only submit photos for which you own the copyright.
- Size may be up to 10 MB: upload them full-size
- Horizontal (landscape) oriented images are preferred, since vertical (portrait) ones won't work in the banner.
- Don’t post selfies
Backlog
- You may currently find 2 versions of the migrated photos in your images collection; we will remove the smaller ones later on, as they are not intended to be used anymore.
- Some 50 banner photos have the wrong name of the owner attached. We know which ones and will rename them.
- Sometimes you will see "<site name> by 27for27" in the banner text; this does not mean that our community member 27for27 has been extremely busy supplying photos, it's an error while attaching the name of the actual owner.
- When a photo is not delivered with a review, a random one from the same site will be displayed. This is a "feature" that we are still considering whether it is worth keeping.
- Right after the migration, you may have noticed that a picture was displayed upside down. This is due to the way some phone cameras store photos. If you still have one like this, turn the picture around and save it again on a PC/laptop, and then upload it again. The issue has been fixed for all photos that are newly uploaded from the 21st of July onwards.
- Some people have reported not being able to see their images while uploading them from a phone directly into a review. The workaround is to add them to Images first, and then select them at the review. And don't overdo it - 3 or 4 in an average review should be plenty.
- We aim to get rid of the Photos from the Public Domain altogether. We will not add any new ones and they have been removed from the banners already. Only in exceptional cases, like Bikini Atoll where it is almost impossible to get a photo from a community member, will they be allowed to stay.
