Another suprise in Togo! From the 4 places of the TWHS Nok is most easily reached and the largest. At the time of my visit (late 2022) the northern parts of Togo, close to Burkina Faso, are not 100% safe. It's safe on the main roads, but my driver and local guide in the north advised against staying overnight there to not attract attention.

In the north of Togo, towards the border with Burkina Faso, the landscaped changes drastically. There are huge sandstone cliffs facing north. It’s these cliffs that are of interest as there are shelters at the top of several cliffs dating to the 17-19th century. The Nok Grotto is approximately 20 meters from the top of the cliffs and features a 50-meter-long and 10-15 meters deep grotto. It was used as a shelter, storage place for food during times of turmoil, with a natural cool temperature and fresh water source. The grotto was also used for cooking and living, as evidenced by the black ceiling. It remains a spiritual sanctuary for locals still today.

What you will see are mainly big jars which contained grain and other food. Everything is well restored and the place is kept in good condition.

It is recommended to visit the grotto with a local guide and plan ahead, as it is closed otherwise. There are phone numbers written on the signs but my simcard didn't have reception. Prices are written there as well which are cheap. There will probably someone coming with a list or whatever asking for more money to visit the region. This is scam so don't pay. Maybe that's why we had a flat tire when we wanted to leave.

All in all I enjoyed the place and was much better as I expected.
