Visit: 11th of sept.2024
Every day at 06.35am there is a direct bus (bus1054) from Budapest's Puskas Ferenc Stadion (metro:Puskas Ferenc Stadion) bus station to Aggtelek and at around 14.50 back to Budapest.
The arrival time in Aggtelek is 10.45...very inconvenient as the winter schedule is already in effect so that visits to the cave take place at 10.00/13.00/15.00. Instead of waiting for two hours, I decided to walk the 2 km long path to the slovakian sister cave Domica. It took me about 30 minutes to walk on an asphalted road with almost no traffic at all to reach Domica crossing the border with its abandoned border buildings. The tour in Domica started at 12.30.
There are lockers, a coffee machine, an abandoned-looking holiday complex with statues, mini trains and other Disneyland-like characters. However, the organization and foreign language skills in Domica were very good. The tour started on time. There were only two other visitors that day, two elderly slovaks. The young female guide spoke excellent english and answered all questions. I really liked the Domica cave because of its wealth of colors. I truly enjoyed my tour through the cave.
A well-informed guide and an amazingly alien underworld. Domica didnt disappoint me.
What should also be mentioned is that in the entrance building of the Domica cave, in front of the ticket offices and in an extra room, there is a kind of exhibition about the cave with many information boards and exhibits.
No photos are allowed inside unless you pay a high photo fee. Afterwards I leisurely walked back to Aggtelek, where I took part in the guided tour there at 3 p.m. Around 20 people took part in the tour; the guide only spoke hungarian. There are no lockers and the cashier refused to keep my bag in his ticket booth. Personally, I liked the Aggtelek cave much less than its slovakian counterpart because I missed the colorfulness of the Domica cave.
I had intended to take a bus to a nearby town and from there another one to Miskolc, but a spanish couple with a car had the same route and gave me a lift. I stayed overnight in the third largest hungarian city, Miskolc, which turned out to be really pleasant and quite interesting. From there I traveled the following day to Tokaj, the wine region of Hungary, another WHS.

Public transport: I used the app "MAV" for all transportation in Hungary. You just have to find the right button to switch the language in the app's settings.Just one warning: you cant reserve a seat through the app.As far as trains are concerned this doesnt really matter, but it could be quite important when booking a bus ticket.
For example, the bus at 6.35 from Budapest to Aggtelek was quite empty and 90% of the passengers got off at Eger-I was the only one who stayed inside the bus till Aggtelek.
However,I had arrived at the bus station at around 6.10....three ticket counters were open,no queues. For around 0,80€ I bought a seat reservation at one of the counters. The lady told me that it was not necesarry, and it wasnt, but she also told me that the situation could be different during the weekends or during high season in july or august.
