I like the concept of World Heritage, and I like to travel, so combining these two is very enjoyable. However, I don't travel outside of Europe that often, so my ultimate goal would be to visit all WH sites in Europe.

My most impressive site: Rome and Grand Canyon

My proposal for a new site: Mount Vesuvius and Phlegreian Fields, Historic University Towns of Oxford and Cambridge, Windsor Castle, Death Valley National Park, Old Town of Hall in Tirol and Schwaz Silver Mines, Historic Centre of Innsbruck and Ambras Castle, Bavarian Royal Castles, Moon Landing Sites: Cape Canaveral/Kennedy Space Center and Houston/Johnson Space Center (Mission Control)

Convent of Christ in Tomar

You can spend many pleasant hours wandering around this huge complex, a mixture of a castle and a monastery. It was founded in the 12th century by the Knights Templar, …

Evora by Klaus Freisinger

Evora

Évora has received some mixed reviews on this site, and, although I had a pleasant visit (admittedly a quite short one), I also thought the town was a bit overrated …

Elvas by Klaus Freisinger

Elvas

Today, the border between Spain and Portugal is hardly visible, but in centuries past, it was heavily fortified and fought over. There is a fair number of fortified border towns …

Aranjuez by Klaus Freisinger

Aranjuez (Inscribed)

Aranjuez

My expectations for Aranjuez were not too high - another royal palace close to a big capital -, but it's very easy to reach by commuter rail from Madrid, and …

Alcala de Henares (Inscribed)

Alcala de Henares

Alcalá is just a short train ride from Madrid and makes a very interesting half-day trip from the capital. Even though I visited on a Monday afternoon, which meant that …

Cuenca by Klaus Freisinger

Cuenca (Inscribed)

Cuenca

Cuenca makes a good stopover between the Mediterranean coast and Madrid, and the location of the Old Town is quite spectacular. Apart from that, though, I have to say that …

Studley Royal Park

This is a site I went to with rather low expectations, but which turned out to be very interesting - and the fact that I visited on a gloriously warm …

Liverpool

I arrived in Liverpool by night ferry from Belfast, and spent a whole day walking around the city. Apart from the Beatles and its 2 football teams, the city is …

Saltaire by Klaus Freisinger

Saltaire (Inscribed)

Saltaire

One of a whole bunch of industrial sites in the UK, Saltaire has the advantage of being just a 15-minute train ride from Leeds, and the station is right in …

Giant's Causeway by Klaus Freisinger

Giant's Causeway (Inscribed)

Giant's Causeway

I visited the Giant's Causeway as a daytrip by train and bus from (London)derry via Coleraine. You arrive at a huge new visitor centre, and then you can set off …

Vilnius by Klaus Freisinger

Vilnius (Inscribed)

Vilnius

Even though it doesn't have any standout attractions, Vilnius is a very pretty and clean city with a well-preserved old town and a large number of historic buildings. The many …

Kernavė

Everything that can be said about Kernave has already been mentioned on this site - it is a reasonably interesting site that makes for a nice excursion from Vilnius and …

New Lanark by Klaus Freisinger

New Lanark (Inscribed)

New Lanark

This is really quite an interesting site because of its good state of preservation - you can easily imagine yourself being a millworker (or owner) in the early 19th century. …

Forth Bridge by Klaus Freisinger

Forth Bridge

There is not much to add to the reviews about the Forth Bridge - it's one of Scotland's most recognizable landmarks, and if you are lucky on your approach to …

I visited Le Havre as a day trip from Paris on a hot summer day during the EURO 2016, as a distraction after watching a poor performance by the Austrian …

Speyer Cathedral

Neither Germany in particular nor Europe in general suffer from a lack of WH-listed cathedrals, but the one in Speyer was one of the first on the list, and for …

Ferrara by Els Slots

Ferrara (Inscribed)

Ferrara

Ferrara is certainly one of the most livable cities in Italy, being the country's bicycle capital and having many green spaces. Its historic centre is quite interesting and pleasant, as …

In my opinion, Ravenna is one of the finest and most interesting WH sites not just in Italy, but in all of Europe. The remains from the late Roman/early Byzantine …
