Island of St Helena

WHS Score 0.0 Votes 0
Located in the south Atlantic, the Island of St Helena is nearly 2,000km from the nearest major landmass, making it one of the remotest places in the world. The island is composed mostly of rugged volcanic terrain and large coastal cliffs. The island was previously covered with unique endemic vegetation and bird life, including the iconic Wirebird. However human settlement has led to large change in land usage meaning the island now has large areas of bare rock, but starting in the 20th century there have been concerted efforts to conserve the remaining native species and restore elements of the previously forested interior.
