WHS Score 0.77 Votes 2 Average 1.0
Mari and Dura Europos both lie on the western bank of Euphrates river and were trading cities. Their combined remains come from the Sumerian, Greek, and Roman periods. Mari dates from 2,900 BC and was purposely built. Its remains constitute a tell, that has only been partly excavated. Over 25,000 clay tablets in Akkadian language written in cuneiform were discovered. Dura Europos was a Hellenistic, Parthian and Roman border city.
