Petrified Forest of Lesvos

WHS Score 0.38 Votes 2 Average 0.5
The Petrified Forest of Lesvos is located in the eastern part of the island of Lesbos in the northern Aegean Sea. The petrified forest consists of hundreds of petrified trunks of conifers and deciduous trees. It was formed 20 million years ago during the Lower Miocene when the Aegean Sea was a continental area with intense volcanic activity. Volcanic ash falls and mudflows enclosed the subtropical mixed forest and petrified the trees.
