Shell Beach
Shell Beach is a 90 mile long stretch of beach sections, which is the nesting ground for four out of the eight species of sea turtles (green turtle, leatherback, olive ridley and hawksbill). Turtles used to be slaughtered for their meat and eggs, but the area is now strictly preserved with the support of local (Amerindian) communities. The beach along the Atlantic coastline consists of sea shells, hence the name. In 2017, the beach was closed to tourism following serious flooding and coastal erosion.
