The Site of Ancient Town of Takhti-Sangin
The Site of Ancient Town of Takhti-Sangin (also included in the serial nominations “Silk Road Sites in Tajikistan) is an ancient fortified citadel built in the 3rd century BC and in use until the 3rd or 4th century AD. It is situated at the confluence of the Vaksh and Panj rivers merging to form the Amu Darya river (Oxus river in Greek, now the Tajik-Afghan border). It is one of the largest monuments of Zoroastrianism and shows strong Greek influence. In its center is the unique Temple of Oxes (ox was god of Amu-Darya). More than 5,000 valuables made or gold, ivory, alabaster were found here.
