Since 1997, I have traveled extensively with a focus on World Heritage Sites (WHS) while working in ICT management. I quit in 2022, and since then, I have been dedicating all my time to WHS (including running this website) and WH travel.

Plans for 2025

Scotland in August

Big Trip to #1,000 (November/December)

My most impressive site: Kathmandu Valley (Nepal)

My proposal for a new site: Janaki Mandir, Janakpur (Nepal), Puthia (Bangladesh)

A warning to future Potsdam visitors first: don't make the mistake I made to walk from the train station to the Sanssouci park. It takes at least half an hour …

Monastery of Geghard

Geghard monastery has a great setting, amidst rocky mountains. The dark grey monastery is a popular day trip from Yerevan (often combined with the pagan-but-completely-rebuilt Garni temple), and also for …

Valletta

The city of Valletta is one of the early WHS (1980), usually a good omen (together with matching criterium 1, a masterpiece of human creative genius, which Valletta also does). …

Megalithic Temples of Malta

I visited them the wrong way around, I now notice: the "youngest" temple first. This one is at Tarxien, in the town of Paola (close to the Hypogeum). It looks …

Wartburg Castle

A surprise visit this one was. After spending the Easter weekend in Weimar, I noticed I had to pass Eisenach to drive back to Holland. And my way-too-big-to-be-handy Germany road …

Classical Weimar

Entering the town by car, I noticed a sign displaying Weimar's city partnerships with Siena and Trier. It has picked its partners well, as Weimar turned out to be a …

The video in the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar is a perfect introduction to the history of the Bauhaus school. It was literally a school: with pupils (men and women), a …

Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is an important attraction in the Krakow area. It has a long history of tourism: already in the 15th-century visitors were taken underground. Prominent Europeans like …

Cracow's historical centre can be easily explored on foot. It was snowing a bit when I walked around (that's why the photos look somewhat bleak). At Wawel, the Castle, I …
